Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils located at the back of the throat. It is one of the most commonly occurring conditions in children.14 Tonsillitis can result in symptoms such as inflamed tonsils, fever, painful swallowing, and in some cases a slight change in voice. A throat infection or sore throat (pharyngitis) is also a common complaint of individuals who suffer from tonsillitis.15

Tonsillitis is mainly caused by viral infections such as the common cold or flu which cannot be treated with antibiotics. However, tonsillitis can also be caused by bacterial infections such as Streptococcus (GABHS) infections and can be effectively with antibiotics.16

For bacterial tonsillitis, antibiotics are generally prescribed to treat the infection. For viral tonsillitis, antibiotics are not usually helpful and the virus must run its course for the tonsillitis to resolve. In both viral and bacterial tonsillitis, Andolex®-C Throat Spray or Rinse can help provide symptomatic relief to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Should the infection occur repeatedly or if the inflamed tonsils are interfering with sleep or breathing, a tonsillectomy may be required as recommended or advised by the doctor.14
